Back when I ran an MSP, selling cloud wasn’t just about knowing your stuff: it was about anticipating your prospect’s concerns and having solid answers ready to go. Now, as Cloud Services for MSPs, we help other MSPs make that transition smoother by equipping them with the right tools, services, and responses.
Let me walk you through the 9 questions we got asked over and over again and how we answered them with confidence!
1. Isn’t my server safer in my office?
Nope! That’s one of the most common misconceptions. I had a client once with their servers locked up tight in a “secure” closet: with floor-to-ceiling windows. Fancy alarm system, sensors, the whole deal. Guess what? Thieves smashed the windows, stole everything, and were gone before the cops even showed up.
Your office can’t match the physical security of a data center. It’s just not built for it.
2. Isn’t it easier for my data to get hacked in the cloud?
Not really. A server can be hacked whether it’s in your office or in the cloud. Hackers don’t care where it’s physically located: they’re going after poor passwords, outdated software, and misconfigurations.
We always enforced strong password policies, regular rotation, and security updates: whether on-prem or in the cloud. That’s the real difference!
3. Why should I go to the cloud?
This is a big one. And the right answer depends on the client.
You’ve got to do your research before the sales call. Check their website, LinkedIn, anything that gives you insight into how they work. Are they remote-friendly? Do they have salespeople on the road? Do they need 24/7 uptime?
The more you know, the better you can frame the benefits: like remote access, better uptime, reduced risk, and more.
4. What’s going to be different for me in the cloud?
Most people hate change, right? So we made sure the day-to-day felt familiar. Desktop icons might shift a little, and the login box might look different, but we kept everything else the same. That way, users didn’t panic, and everything just worked.
5. How much is this going to cost? Is it more or less?
This one needs finesse.
You can’t do a simple dollar-for-dollar comparison with on-prem servers. Talk about total cost of ownership: hardware, licensing, extended warranties, downtime risk… all of it.
Ask your client, “If your server went down for a week, what would that cost you?” If the answer is “not much,” maybe cloud isn’t the right fit. But if it’s “a lot”: you’ve got your case.
And don’t forget, cloud grows with them! They only pay for what they need today. That flexibility? Huge value.
6. Is the cloud reliable?
Absolutely! And it better be.
We run in redundant, audited data centers with multiple generators, internet providers, and VMware clusters. If one host fails, it just shifts to another. It’s seamless. You don’t get that kind of resilience with on-prem servers.
7. What happens if the internet goes down?
Good question! The answer: your cloud-based business keeps running.
Just because your office loses internet doesn’t mean your cloud environment goes offline. Orders are still processed, phones still ring (if you’re using VoIP), and your data stays safe.
Plus, users can connect from anywhere. Home, coffee shop, hotspot:just make sure it’s secure. And if reliability is a concern? Add a second internet provider as a backup. We’ve done it. It works.
8. What about compliance? HIPAA, PCI, all that?
It’s all about the provider. Some don’t bother with compliance, and that’s a big red flag.
We made sure our data centers are fully audited and compliant every year. We’ve got documentation ready for clients who need it. You should too.
9. Where will my data be stored?
People don’t want their data floating around the globe. And honestly, I get it.
We keep all our data in the United States. We can tell you exactly where it lives. With some of the big guys like Azure and AWS, you don’t always get that transparency. In fact, they used to say in the fine print that they could move your workloads around to balance the system. Not cool.
Start Answering With Confidence!
When selling cloud, you’ve got to be ready. Know your stuff, understand your customer, and if you don’t know the answer to a question? Say so. Tell them you’ll get back to them. It’s way better than guessing and losing trust!
And one last thing: write down new questions that come up so you’re ready next time. And hey: if you’re ever stuck, reach out to us. We’re happy to help!
Have a great week and weekend.
