How to Maintain Robust Security For Your MSP Consumer

Cybercrime is constantly evolving. With many businesses transitioning to the cloud in recent years, the cloud has become a significant target for cybercriminals worldwide.  As an MSP, you need to make sure that you are providing up to date cloud servers with robust security options to prevent unauthorized access to your customer’s information.  What are some of the most common ways to help your customers cloud servers stay secure?

One common way to strengthen the security of your customer’s cloud server is by using a firewall.  Firewalls act like a wall which can help to prevent hackers from attacking.  Think of them as a gatekeeper.  How do they help?

  1. Monitor Traffic. Firewalls monitor traffic coming in and leaving your cloud server. A firewall will inspect this traffic for threats and if found, will block them.
  2. Protect against malware.  Malware gathers data about internet usage and devices and sends that information off to an unauthorized third party. Using a Firewall will block malware before it can cause damage to your system.
  3. Prevent Hackers. Hackers are always looking for computers that are easy to access.  Many times, the mere presence of a firewall is enough to encourage a hacker to look elsewhere.
  4. Implement access policies. Users may be accessing websites that contain malicious content, often by accident. Firewalls can implement access policies allowing users to only access approved websites for protection purposes.

Cloud firewalls should also be implemented in addition to great network security.  What are some additional ways to protect your customer’s cloud server?

  1. Use a VPN.  VPNs are tunnels between your cloud server and your customer’s users.  Think of it like a tunnel instead of an open highway.  Implementing a VPN can add additional security to your customer’s cloud access.
  2. Good passwords.  Keep passwords complex and random to prevent easy guessing.  Change passwords frequently.  Don’t forget, your cloud server is open to the internet, so it is very important to keep your passwords secure.
  3. Education.  Cybercriminals are always looking for simple ways to gain access to your cloud server, so tactics like relying on users to open emails containing malware or click on malicious links are still prevalent.  When putting in a cloud server for your customer, make sure that you educate their staff on cybersecurity dangers.
  4. Keep software up to date.  Make sure that any software running on your cloud server is up to date with the latest software versions and security patches.

It’s crucial that MSPs like yours up your cloud services game so that clients can feel completely at ease functioning in the cloud.  By making robust security a top priority, MSPs can help clients feel safe and reach their full potential on the cloud.
