When I owned my MSP, I learned some lessons the hard way: deal by deal, client by client. Looking back, the biggest difference between MSPs that struggle and those that scale isn’t the tech. It’s marketing.
But here’s the kicker: most MSPs have no idea what marketing actually is! They think it’s a LinkedIn post here or an email blast there. Maybe even a nice logo or website. But marketing is so much more than that.
So What Is Marketing, Really?
Here’s my simple definition, one I wish someone had told me decades ago.
Marketing is anything you do to increase the demand for or sales of what you sell.
It’s not just ads, campaigns, or your brand colors. It’s everything that makes people want what you offer. It’s how you answer the phone. The speed of your help desk’s response. The friendliness in your voice when a client calls frustrated. Even the look of your invoices!
Marketing is your promotions, products, pricing, and policies. It’s how you show up every single day. Every single touchpoint is marketing.
And you know what? Kindness, joy, and urgency are some of the most underused marketing tools in our industry. When clients feel heard, understood, and appreciated, that’s powerful marketing in action!
Build the Value Before You Broadcast It
Before you can tell your story, you have to be a story. If your business isn’t remarkable, no amount of marketing can fix that. Advertising is creative bragging, but first, you’ve got to have something worth bragging about!
Take Dyson, for example. They didn’t just talk about “better suction.” They engineered it and made the difference visible. Or Volvo, which built decades of trust by proving safety through testing and innovation.
So ask yourself, what’s your Dyson moment? What’s your Volvo promise? What’s the one thing you do so well, you could demonstrate it live and wow a client? When you can answer that, your marketing instantly becomes more powerful.
Stop Fighting for the Same Slice of the Pie
Too many MSPs fight over the same 5% of business owners who already know they need IT help. That’s not growth. That’s just recycling opportunities. Real magic happens when you expand your market.
When I ran my MSP, I realized that education is marketing! Think about Home Depot. They don’t just sell tools. They teach people how to use them. And guess what? Those people leave with armfuls of products.
Or Peloton. They don’t just sell bikes. They sell motivation, community, and confidence. People buy into the experience before they ever buy the product.
You can do the same. Host cybersecurity webinars. Offer “disaster-proof your business” lunch and learns. Show up to educate, not sell. Because when you teach, you remove fear and build trust, and that’s when the real buying begins.
Clarity Wins, Not Noise
Every MSP in your town claims 24/7 support, security, and proactive monitoring. So how do you stand out? You don’t win by being louder. You win by being clearer and more honest.
Remember when Domino’s owned their critics? They admitted their pizza tasted like cardboard, revamped the recipe, and turned honesty into their brand! Or FedEx, whose promise of overnight delivery wasn’t just talk. They built the logistics to prove it.
What about you? What’s your Domino’s moment or FedEx moment?
If your cloud clients stayed online through a hurricane, tell that story. If your backup system restored data in minutes, tell that story. People don’t buy slogans. They buy confidence!
Marketing Is Everyone’s Job
Here’s a truth I learned too late. Marketing isn’t one person’s job. It’s everyone’s.
From your techs to your admin team, every touchpoint shapes the client experience. Your techs are your brand ambassadors. Your account managers set the tone. When clients feel that joyful “we’ve got you” energy at every step, they don’t just stay. They brag about you!
So ask yourself:
- Does your team know your value story?
- Do they know your ideal client?
- Are they communicating it consistently?
If not, that’s your next marketing task.
Marketing Isn’t a Department, It’s a Mindset
Marketing isn’t “one more thing” to do. It’s the thing you have to do.
If you want more leads, more loyal clients, and more referrals, start by walking through your business as if you were a prospect. From your website to your voicemail to your follow-ups, ask yourself, “Does this make someone want what we offer?”
Then fix one thing this week. Just one. Then another next week. Bit by bit, you’ll create an experience that clients can’t help but talk about!
Because first, you have to be a story. Then you can tell it.

He nailed it. When your story is clear and your value undeniable, growth becomes effortless.
